“The Kingmaker,” a critically acclaimed documentary tackling the controversial history of Imelda Marcos, is finally available for streaming.

The award-winning documentary by American filmmaker Lauren Greenfield premiered on Aug. 1 midnight via ABS-CBN’s local streaming platform iWant.

“The Kingmaker” chronicles the former first lady and her family’s rise, fall and rise again in the Philippines’ political sphere, featuring interviews with Imelda herself.

The documentary is centered on the “indomitable character” of Imelda, the wife of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, according to the overview on iWant.

“‘The Kingmaker’ examines, with intimate access, the Marcos family’s improbable return to power in the Philippines. The film explores the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and chronicles Imelda’s present-day push to help her son, Bongbong, win the vice-presidency,” it read.

“To this end, Imelda confidently rewrites her family’s history of corruption, replacing it with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country. In an age when fake news manipulates elections, Imelda’s comeback story serves as a dark fairy tale,” it further stated.

“The Kingmaker” was previously slated for an earlier release, but was postponed due to adjustments on iWant’s programming schedule.

Those interested can stream the documentary for free via iWant’s official website or app.

“The Kingmaker” was first shown in the country last January at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the University of the Philippines Film Institute.

It won the audience award for best documentary film at the Warsaw International Film Festival in 2019.  /ra
