Dolphy was cited for his contributions to the Philippine entertainment industry in a career spanning six decades, as he starred in “200 movies and multiple long-running television series.”

Dolphy, born Rodolfo Vera Quizon, was born in 1928 in Manila.

“Soon, what started as a modest childhood gig selling peanuts and watermelon seeds at movie theaters turned into a full-blown obsession with the performing arts. Able to watch movies for free, Quizon became fixated on the prospect of becoming an actor, which led him to land his first small movie role at age 19,” Google said of Dolphy.

Aside from finding success in the big screen, Dolphy also warmed the hearts of Filipinos by starring in two of the most beloved sitcoms in Philippine television, “John En Marsha” and “Home Along da Riles.”

Dolphy was also conferred with the Philippines’ Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart in 2010.

The legendary comedian died on July 10, 2012 —days before he turned 84—due to complications from pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
