Angel Locsin stood up for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community after some of her followers called same-sex relationships a sin while citing the Bible.
The remarks came after Locsin expressed her support as an ally of the community, as seen on her Instagram page yesterday, June 29.
“In a world with so much hatred, everyone should be allowed to feel safe [and] loved,” she said. The actress also posted a photo that featured the words “PROUD ALLY” on top of the colors of the rainbow.
Following her show of support for the LGBTQ+ community, a certain @j9y_alfonso replied to her post and quoted the Bible verse Romans 1:27, which spoke about men suffering due to their lusting over their fellow men.
“[R]epent, save the [sinners] and stop the wickedness,” the netizen added.
Locsin later replied, saying, “@j9y_alfonso As for my knowledge as a [C]hristian, ang paulit ulit na binabanggit sa [B]ible is love one another or love your neighbor. Yan ang tungkulin natin sa [D]iyos at kapwa na dapat nating sundin at Diyos lang ang makakahusga.”
(@j9y_alfonso As for my knowledge as a [C]hristian, what is repeatedly said in the Bible is to love one another or love your neighbor. That is our duty to God and our neighbors that we should follow and only God can judge.)
Another Instagram user (@kathrinaalbano) chimed in and said that it is Locsin’s responsibility as a Christian to “enlighten [her] brethren” while stressing that homosexuality is considered a sin in the Bible.
“@kathrinaalbano so what’s your point?” Locsin replied. “I’m all for equal rights. [Why] deny them that dahil tingin mong tama ka (because you think you are correct)?”
Meanwhile, one more netizen (@lorelieoliveria) joined the exchange and stated that while it is true that the Bible tells everyone to love one another, same-sex relationships are still wrong in the eyes of God.
She also agreed with Locsin’s sentiments that no one but God has the right to judge. However, @lorelieoliveria stressed that supporting people in same-sex relationships is wrong since they are committing a sin. She added that she has a gay brother, whom she prays will realize his mistake.
The Instagram user then explained that there is nothing wrong with their different opinions, but hopes they know what they should be supporting.
“No hatred,” the netizen stated. “Spread love po.”
A different Instagram user (@bengyonce14) later echoed @lorelieoliveria’s sentiments. She also noted that “love is for everyone” as long as it is right in the eyes of God and not of people.
However, Locsin pointed out that the netizen is judging members of the LGBTQ+ community.
“That’s not your job,” the actress said. “Your job in this world is to love your neighbor. Kaya marami po ang na-tuturn off magbalik simbahan sa mga LGBTQ+ dahil sa mga ganito.”
(This is why many members of the LGBTQ+ community are not keen on returning to church.)
The netizen then pointed out that everyone will be judged “at the end” like what is written in the Bible. She noted as well how everyone is sinful, but that it is up to each person to return to God during their lives.
She also mentioned how she spends time with gays and lesbians and loves them as her women and men.
“@bengyonce14 si Lord po ang judge at hindi tayo (Lord is the judge and not us),” Locsin replied.
Along with Locsin, other celebrities such as Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray have expressed their support for the LGBTQ+ community this month, which is celebrated as Pride Month. /ra
