Actress Bela Padilla called out a netizen for telling entertianers to “shut up” regarding social issues, pointing out that they too have the right to voice their opinions.

Padilla answered one Twitter user with the handle @pattytagal after the latter replied to a tweet by comedienne K Brosas with an open letter to singers and actors, which read, “We spend our [hard-earned] money to hear your music. And to watch you pretend to be characters in movies and on TV.”

“Your only job is to entertain us. To take us away from reality. Your personal opinion means nothing to us. You are insignificant and influential only in your own mind. And within the mind of your elitist peers. You are a marionette to us. Nothing more. Sing. Act. Shut up,” it continued.

Padilla shared with followers @pattytagal’s views and her reply to the latter’s tweet, which read, “Patty is the exact type of person who agrees w/ the [Anti-Terror Bill] and you can see why with how she sees people.”

“Might I respectfully remind you Patty, that the Entertainers of this country pay insane amounts of taxes that contribute to the society you live in,” the actress said on Twitter yesterday, June 5.

One @jancamoro, meanwhile, pointed out to the actress that “the amount of your tax does not make your opinion makes you more correct.”

“Unfortunately, you are idolized by your talent or whatever and not because of your POV. Also, the limit of your freedom of expression is when you start fostering hate,” the Twitter user added.

Padilla then clarified: “The only point here is that Patty said we shouldn’t have an opinion at all. That’s all I was answering. Nowhere in my tweet will you read an implication that anyone’s opinion is better.”

More and more celebrities have lately been speaking out about several social issues in the country, including pushing for the scrapping of the anti-terror bill and calling for mass testing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beauty queen Pia Wurtzbach, for one, recently broke her silence on political issues and joined online mass protests to junk the said bill, which now only needs President Duterte’s signature to be passed into law.  /ra
