After a fire hit “Happyland,” a slum area in Tondo, Manila, actresses Bea Alonzo and Barbie Imperial immediately did what they could to help affected families by sending them food and relief goods.
Alonzo distributed 500 packs of bread to the children of Happyland through her “I Am Hope” organization. Imperial, together with her team, handed out 525 relief goods to families in Happyland and Payatas in Quezon City.
Fire swept through the Tondo slum area last Saturday, April 18. More than 500 families were left homeless due to the incident.
Alonzo took the news to her Instagram account yesterday, April 21. The actress was shocked to hear about the fire especially since Happyland was a recent beneficiary of Project Pearls Tondo. Project Pearls is an organization that conducts outreach programs to slum communities, aiming to help disadvantaged children achieve a better life.
Alonzo said I Am Hope immediately responded upon hearing about the fire incident and distributed bread to the children of these affected families. The actress also acknowledged her friend Divine Degollacion for managing the initiative.
Meanwhile, out of the 525 relief goods Imperial and her team packed, 221 were given to the fire victims in Tondo, as per her Instagram post yesterday. The rest were handed out to residents in Payatas.
“After a week of preparation, nakapag pack po kami ng relief goods na sasapat para sa 525 na pamilya na nangangailangan ng tulong (we were able to pack relief goods good enough for 525 families who need help),” Imperial said.
Imperial also thanked everyone who provided the goods and the venue for repacking. She also expressed her gratitude to friends who gave their own time to repack the items.
Some of the items included in the relief were essential COVID-19 items such as face masks and soap.
Imperial personally thanked the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for helping them distribute the items. She also promised a second wave of donations.
Alonzo’s organization also collaborated with actress Angel Locsin’s COVID-19 initiative, UniTENTweStandPH, as seen on Alonzo’s Instagram post last Monday, April 20.
While Locsin’s project aims to provide hospital tents to numerous hospitals inside and outside the metro, Alonzo provided PPE, alcohol and energy drinks to some of Locsin’s beneficiary hospitals in Bataan. JB
