WATCH: Original ‘Hamilton’ cast reunites online to serenade 9-year-old girl for her birthday
The original cast of the “Hamilton” musical reunited via video call to surprise a 9-year-old girl with a performance of “Alexander Hamilton.”
The reunion was arranged by actor and filmmaker John Krasinski as part of the second episode of his YouTube series “SomeGoodNews” last Sunday, April 5.
The little girl’s mother earlier reached out to the show’s writer and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, on Twitter last month. She told him that she and her daughter were supposed to see the Broadway hit in Jacksonville, Florida.
They were going to watch the show as a birthday gift to her 9-year-old, adding that it had been her dream since she first watched the musical on Broadway last year. However, their plan did not push through due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
@Lin_Manuel We were supposed to see Hamilton in Jacksonville tonight—DD’s 9th bday present (seeing Hamilton has been her dream since she saw her 1st Broadway show last year), but we’re home watching Mary Poppins Returns instead. At least we’re safe & healthy.

They instead chose to stay home and watch “Mary Poppins Returns,” which stars Miranda and Kransinski’s wife, Emily Blunt.

After hearing of her canceled birthday plans, Krasinski promised to send Aubrey and her family to New York when the COVID-19 crisis is “all over.” Blunt later joined Kransinski before Miranda suddenly “Zoom bombed” their call.
In addition to Krasinski’s promise, Miranda told Aubrey: “I think we can top that right now though.”
Other people then immediately joined the call as the opening tunes to “Alexander Hamilton,” one of the musical’s songs, started to play.
The video suddenly cut to Leslie Odom Jr., who played Aaron Burr in the production, singing the first lines of the track. Miranda and the other original cast members such as Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo and Jonathan Groff also followed, belting out their respective lines in the song.
“Hamilton” centers on the story of the American founding father, Alexander Hamilton. It premiered on Broadway in February 2015 and has gained critical acclaim through the years. /ra
