Filipino band Sponge Cola sang their 2008 hit “Makapiling Ka” online to express their support for the frontliners fighting the spread of COVID-19.
Band members Yael Yuzon, Gosh Dilay, T Mac Cruz and Erwin Armovit performed the song from the safety of their homes through a video call, as seen on the band’s Facebook page yesterday, March 28.
“More entertainment! Dedicated to all our frontliners, lalo na sa mga nasa ospital (especially those in hospitals)” the band said. “Kayo ang tunay na mga #bagongbayani (You are the real #newheroes).”
The band’s performance comes days after they participated in “Bayanihan, Musikahan”, a series of online concerts from various Filipino artists to raise funds for COVID-19 efforts.
Yael’s wife Karylle sang with Sponge Cola for their mini show in said effort.
The project was initiated by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, which he kicked off on March 18 with his own performance. Since it was launched, other musicians such as Ebe Dancel, Jim Paredes and Top Suzara have also held their own online concerts.
In an interview with Inquirer, Cayabyab said the effort will create a collection of online shows that fans can choose from on the “Bayanihan, Musikahan” Facebook page.
Throughout the performances, the musicians also urged their fans to donate to help provide relief goods for those affected by the ongoing pandemic. Those interested in giving monetary aid can extend their help through this page. The collected amount will be coursed through the project’s partner organizations: Likhaan, Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Pamilya ng Pantawid and Caritas Manila.
“Those three, collectively, tend to some 250,000 families in different communities around Metro Manila. We hope to raise funds to provide them with food packs and medical supplies,” Cayabyab said.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines has increased to 1,075, as of yesterday. The Department of Health reported that 68 people have already died while 35 have recovered from the disease. JB
