Actor and television host Luis Manzano is calling on the public to practice proper etiquette as the novel coronavirus continues to spread both locally and globally.
Manzano urged others to “take care of each other” not only during the outbreak of COVID-19, but also even after the global pandemic has been contained.
“So pakiusap [na lang] sa lahat ng mga makakasama ko sa mga darating na linggo, let’s take care of each other ok? Wag naman tayo umubo o humaching ng [harap-harapan],” he posted on Instagram earlier today, March 12.
(I am asking all those I would be crossing paths with in the coming weeks, let’s take care of each other, ok? Do not cough or sneeze right in front of everyone.)
“Reposting this as a reminder — Kung may sakit na, mag mask na po tayo,” Manzano stressed. “[At] sana hindi tumigil ang ganito after NCOV, alagaan natin ang isa’t isa kahit sa mga simpleng sakit.”
(If you are already sick, please wear a mask. And I hope this does not stop even after NCOV; let us take care of each other even for simple diseases.)
Manzano’s post comes just as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines continues to rise. As of yesterday, March 11, 49 local cases have been reported, while a 67-year-old patient with no recent overseas travel history is the second confirmed fatality in the country and the first Filipino to die.
Globally, there are 118,326 recorded cases while 4,292 people have died, also as of yesterday. COVID-19 currently has a mortality rate of 3.63%.
According to the World Health Organization, the virus spreads by inhaling small droplets of saliva when an infected person coughs or sneezes. A person can also be infected by touching one’s mouth, nose or eyes after touching an object where small droplets from an infected person landed.
WHO studies found out that the novel coronavirus spreads mainly through the latter, stating that the “virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through contact with respiratory droplets rather than through the air.”
The WHO has recently declared the outbreak as a pandemic, further urging governments and the public to be more aggressive in fighting the spread of the disease. JB
