Why ‘Let It Be’ is Juris’ personal anthem these days

Juris

I’ve seen Juris grow as an artist. I used to watch her gigs regularly when she was still with MYMP many hit songs ago. Even if she has already made it big, Juris remains grounded. I’m touched that every time she has a concert, Juris never fails to mention me and the other friends she met during her “formative days” on the music scene. Her crystal clear voice will never grow “Jurissic,” este “jurassic.”

It’s been a decade since the sweet chanteuse chose to go solo. To commemorate her 10 years in the biz, she will have a repeat of her major solo concert on Dec. 14, 8 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila (Call Ticketworld at 88919999). Backing her up are the Metro Music Orchestra and special guest Ice Seguerra (who’s also the stage director) under the musical direction of Francis Concio.

FEATURED STORIES

Here’s my chat with Juris:

What excites you about your coming concert? Looking forward to perform again with the orchestra and sing better than the last time.

What song would you never sing? Heavy metal songs, or anything that might not be good for my vocal chords and singing style.

What’s your personal anthem at this point in your life? “Let It Be” by the Beatles. It’s something I need to remind myself more, now that I’m a mom because, to me, all worries concerning our kids are necessary or should be dealt with. I remind myself that with things we can’t control, (just) let it be and surrender… I actually have those words in the song I wrote for my kids (“Be Careful”), which is included in my album.

Tell us about your new album. It’s called “Here’s My Heart,” released in all digital platforms under Star Music. It has 10 tracks, with six new songs and four OPM revivals. The current single is “Paano Kung.”

What’s your take on lip-synching? It’s done by some artists who have so much movement onstage. It’s an option for a great overall performance. I tried singing while dancing, not lip-synching, and I was breathing heavily after. I would choose live over lip-synching as long as there’s no dancing required.

Any embarrassing moment onstage? Not really embarrassed, but more of frustrated … that my voice wasn’t in its best condition during my concert with the Metro Music Orchestra last June. So I’m grateful to have this repeat.

What are you like as a mom and wife? I’m more strict but also very malambing to the kids. As a wife, I’m malambing only, and never strict (laughs).

Aside from singing, what do you wish you could be good at? Cooking

Are great singers like you born, not made? Both. I know some people who took lessons and improved a lot, while some did not. It could also be attributed to genes that need to be developed.

Do you feel threatened when there are new artists on the rise? Not really. I’m pretty sure there are a lot who have the same singing styles.

What’s something not too many people know about Ice Seguerra? He used to not like it when someone wants to try the food on his plate. He feels they should’ve ordered the same—hahaha. But now he has changed, thanks to his wife Liza.

If you could do a duet with any foreign artist, who would you want it to be and what song do you want to sing with him/her? Barbara Streisand (“Evergreen”) or Sting (“Every Breath You Take”).
