“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has become an official ambassador for Puerto Rico, starring in a series of promotional web videos promoting the island’s culture, gastronomy and natural heritage.
In the eight-part YouTube series, Miranda takes viewers on a trip to the island, showing off the territory’s museums, performing art spaces, historic districts, night clubs, restaurants and beaches.
He also introduces viewers to local Puerto Rican personalities and artists who take Miranda to their favorite hotspots on the island.
Some of his own picks include San Juan, Old San Juan, Santurce, the Puerto Rico Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Lote 23, Toro Verde Adventure Park and El Yunque Rainforest.
In episode five, Miranda revisits the island’s dynamic salsa scene with a local singer; in episode six viewers are taken to Calle Loiza, a streetscape pulsing with new restaurants, music clubs, art galleries and food trucks; episode eight explores Puerto Rico’s coffee culture.
Following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria in 2017, Miranda took his production of “Hamilton” to the island as part of collective restoration efforts aimed at revving up the local tourism industry and economy. Spanish chef Jose Andres is another major celebrity who lent his star power to helping the displaced in Puerto Rico. RGA/JB
