MANILA, Philippines — There is a need for “efficiency” and not simply “getting the work done” while shooting for a film or television series, Director Joey Reyes said Thursday, following the accident involving Eddie Garcia, who consequently suffered a neck fracture.
The veteran actor was taping for an upcoming GMA Network teleserye in Tondo, Manila last June 8 when he tripped on a cable wire on set and tumbled.
“These tragic turns of events SHOULD be a wakeup call to all especially those responsible for the everyday mechanics of running a film shoot or tv taping,” Reyes said in a Facebook post.
“Training, discipline & dedication to efficiency not merely getting the work done affects everybody on the set,” he added. “WE MUST LEARN AND BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS!”
The director pointed out how Garcia always took care of his health to remain “exemplary” in his profession despite his age.
“I am sad. I am angry. Even at 90 years of age, Eddie Garcia took pride in taking care of his health, remaining useful & exemplary in his profession & unselfish to his peers,” Reyes said.
“He is a living treasure together with Gloria Romero, Anita Linda, Gina Pareño & so many others who have proven that talent rather than looks is paramount to artistry & not mere celebrity. They are immortals in a business of disposables,” he added.
A video of Garcia suddenly losing consciousness in the midst of taping in Tondo went viral on social media.
GMA Network said it is already investigating the absence of medical personnel on the set.

Garcia remains in “critical condition,” according to the Makati Medical Center.
