Bernardo on being the next Darna: It’s not for me

MANILA, Philippines —  Playing the role of Darna is every girl’s dream, but Kapamilya actress Kathryn Bernardo believes that the role is not for her.

Recently, Liza Soberano announced her withdrawal as the next Darna after she suffered a finger bone fracture at the set of her drama fantasy series “Bagani” last year.

With Soberano’s withdrawal, fans of various celebrities have started pitching for their idols, among which was Bernardo. However, Bernardo felt the role was not for her.

“Personally, Darna is such an iconic role. Alam mo, dream lahat ng babae siguro na maging si Darna, pero, maybe it’s not for me kasi hindi porke’t gusto mo yung role, puwede siya sa iyo, e,” she said in an interview over the weekend.

“For me, may binabagayan siya, and yung nai-imagine, napipiktyuran ko as Darna is someone who’s a bit older than me. Someone na parang mas woman. Woman na talaga,” she added.

Despite this, she said she was delighted to hear her fans pushing her to take on the Darna role.

Bernardo added that she could not see anybody playing Darna after Angel Locsin.

“Kung tatanungin nila ako kung sino yung perfect for the next role, I dont know kasi kahit ako iniisip ko sino pa ba yung pwede after Ate Angel? And, hindi ko alam kung sino,” she said.

“So whoever man yung mapili for the role, kailangan talaga yung sobra sobrang paghandaan. Bigyan ng maraming trainings kasi hindi joke yung darna,” she added.

She then expressed her “full support” for whoever will be picked by the network for the role.

Before announcing her withdrawal, Soberano started filming “Darna” in July 2018 when director Erik Matti still handled the project.

Matti stepped down as director in October 2018 due to “creative differences” with Star Cinema. He was replaced by director Jerrold Tarog. /muf
