The pressure that comes with being an offspring of a revered music icon is something Sean Lennon and Frances Bean Cobain know all too well.
All their lives, they had to put up with critics comparing them to their parents—even when it comes to their fashion choices.
Sean, for example, has avoided putting on a particular style of eyeglasses that his father, John Lennon, and mother, Yoko Ono, used to favor, because people accuse him of being a copycat.
“I have struggled all my life with people telling me that I’m ‘trying’ to look like Dad or Mom. That’s why I rarely wear this type of glasses. But they’re actually just better on my face,” Sean wrote on Instagram with an accompanying photo of him wearing a pair of stylish thin frames.
“It’s funny, but I promise I don’t ‘try’ to look like my parents; it just happens. Especially when I dress cool, because they had epic style, so it is often unintentionally evocative,” he added.
Sean’s post apparently resonated with Frances—daughter of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love—who has had similar experiences.
“I do the same thing re: sunglasses. I try not to wear those friggin’ oval frames often but, when I do, I know they look good on my face. So, what can we do?” Frances replied. “Embrace the similarities and celebrate the differences, I suppose!” —ALLAN POLICARPIO
