Sylvia Sanchez shared her alarm over the pollution in a waterway in Malabon where she is filming for a new project.
The veteran actress posted pictures of the waterway filled with trash on her Instagram today, Jan. 8. The water is hardly seen among the litter, which consists of many plastic items such as bottles and plastic bags.
Sanchez’ pictures show people crossing to the other side through a makeshift boat made of wooden planks and water drums.
In the comments, she said that the polluted water was in Malabon, particularly between Barangays Catmon and Tonsuya.
“It makes me so sad to see that we have put our environment to waste. I wish we all took care of it more,” wrote Sanchez in the post.
In the hashtags, she advocated “plastic-free living” and avoiding single-use plastic.
She said that it was the second shooting day of “Jesusa,” but did not disclose other information about the project. A picture of her on a side street with the production crew shows her in gray scrubs.
Actress Angelika Dela Cruz expressed her disappointment in the comments section. “Nakakalungkot naman yan. Walang disiplina ang tao,” she said. (What a pity. The people do not have discipline.)
Sanchez replied in exasperation, “Disiplina talaga kailangan, matinding disiplina sa sarili.” (We need discipline, extreme discipline with ourselves.)
Sanchez joins the growing number of celebrities using their star power to call attention to environmental problems, including Jericho Rosales, Antoinette Taus, Solenn Heussaff and Daphne Oseña-Paez.
According to a 2015 Ocean Conservancy report, over half of ocean pollution comes from five Asian countries, one of which is the Philippines. /ra
