MANILA, Philippines — South Korean singer Kang Daniel broke Pope Francis’ Guinness World Record for the fastest time to gain 1 million followers on Instagram after joining the social media platform on New Year’s Day.
“Congratulations to K-Pop star Kang Daniel who’s achieved a new record for the fastest time to gain one million fans on @instagram,” Guinness World Record said in a tweet on Thursday.

According to Guinness World Record’s website, Kang reached 1 million followers in 11 hours and 36 minutes.
As of posting, Kang’s Instagram account has gained 1.4 million followers since it launched on January 1.
The previous record was held by Pope Francis whose Instagram account reached one million followers in 12 hours. The Pope’s account, as of posting, has gained 5.8 million followers since it launched in 2016.
Prior to Pope Francis, football player David Beckham held the record after gaining 1 million followers in 24 hours in May 2015.
Kang came to prominence as part of 11-member Korean boy group Wanna One which debuted through the South Korean talent show “Produce 101” in 2017. /muf
