MANILA, Philippines — Brazilian author Paulo Coelho praised the 2009 film “Kinatay” directed by Brillante Mendoza, saying it could be “shortlisted for the Oscars.”

Coelho took to Twitter on Thursday to rave about the film’s “great screenplay, director, actors,” and noted that it was “one of the most disturbing movies” he has watched in 2018.

The movie’s lead actor, Coco Martin, was ecstatic with Coelho’s praises for the film and posted a screenshot of the author’s tweet on Instagram.

The independent film premiered during the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. Mendoza won Best Director for the film during the festival. /ee
