I’ve known Christian Bables since his “Die Beautiful” days because my son IC Mendoza was also an actor in that critically acclaimed film. Many projects and awards later, Christian has remained the same.
I’m glad he’s not letting fame change him a bit. If there are any changes, they show in his constantly improving craft. Christian is one actor who will never allow himself to stagnate or be lulled into a false sense of complacency.
Christian topbills Regal Entertainment’s “Recipe for Love” (opens Nov. 21). He is paired with “Pinoy Big Brother’s” ex-housemate, Cora Waddell. The romantic comedy is about a chef, Calix (Christian), and Val, a blogger (Cora), who discover the sweetness and bitterness of love just like the dishes that the former cooks and the latter reviews. It shows how l’amour can either warm or burn us. Very much like cooking, it depends on the mix.

Here’s my chat with Christian:
If you were a dish, what would you be? Sugar-free chocolate cake, because I’m sweet and sinful in a good way.
What’s your comfort food, and what food will you never eat? Spaghetti. I’ll never eat okra, even if I were starving.
What’s the weirdest delicacy you’ve tried? Jericho Rosales made me eat assorted veggies, which he made into a juice.
What’s more important to you, box-office success or awards? Both. As Direk Chito Roño said, if a film is meant to fly commercially or critically, it will happen at the right time. I leave it to God and to the brilliance of the movie.
What’s your fave scene and dialogue in the movie? My heartwarming mother-and-son scene with Ate Agot Isidro. My line goes: “Gusto ko lang naman maging masaya kagaya mo at ni Papa. Bakit hindi ko makuha yon?”
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for love? I was still working in the corporate world. My girlfriend and I went out of town for one week. I didn’t ask permission from my boss.
Do you prefer older or younger women? I prefer older women because they have more knowledge about life. I don’t go for relationships that lead nowhere.
What has fame taught you? To stay true to my core. Not to lose track of my values and where I came from. Not to let the “system” eat me alive.
If you had to choose between love and career, which would you pick? Love. No amount of success can compare to the fulfillment of knowing that I’ve finally found “the one.”
Another go for Bo’s ‘Retro’
Bo Cerrudo’s show, “My Retro,” was a rousing success last September, so it merits a repeat. Catch the return of the fun “throwback” show on Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. at Teatrino Greenhills. Party like it’s the ’70s all over again.
