Jim Carrey, honored with the Charlie Chaplin Award for Excellence in Comedy by the Britannia Awards last Oct. 26, delivered a rousing speech that criticized the Trump administration.
“Shamelessness is not and will never be a superpower! Kidnapping children is not what great nations do,” he said after receiving the trophy from his “Dumb and Dumber” director Peter Farrelly at the ceremony in Los Angeles.
Carrey, who has expressed his dismay over current events through political caricatures he shares on social media, then dedicated the award to Chaplin, “who battled McCarthyism into exile,” as well as to newsmakers Christine Blasey Ford and Colin Kaepernick, and another outspoken actor-critic, Robert De Niro.
“How dare they besmirch these people,” Carrey, 58, said. “How dare they?!”
The “Ace Ventura” actor added, “ I know this wasn’t funny, but it’s not very funny right now. And I want it to be. And I will be again. But goddamn it, let’s get the balance back [on Election Day!]”
He thanked his daughter Jane, his “tether to this world and everything valuable in it.”—OLIVER PULUMBARIT
