Kapuso actress Marian Rivera recently became the subject of jokes and memes when the 5-year-old video of her singing Rihanna’s “Unfaithful” on GMA’s now-defunct noontime show “Party Pilipinas” back in 2013 resurfaced. The performance saw Rivera singing with actress Glaiza de Castro and Rafael Rosell, both of whom she starred with in the drama series “Temptation of Wife.”

In the video, Rivera can be seen botching the lines of the song, making her the butt of many netizens’ jokes. Rivera seemed to be nervous during the performance, but exhibited grace and calmness in singing her parts—incomprehensible lines and wrong pronunciation aside.

Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez recently came to Rivera’s defense, however, and called on her fans to refrain from making fun of Rivera. It’s known that Velasquez is Rivera’s “ninang” and one of her sponsors in her wedding to Dingdong Dantes back in 2014.

FEATURED STORIES

Velasquez took to Twitter last Oct. 28 to reply to a certain Casper (@NoItsNotCasper) after the latter shared a (now-deleted) tweet seemingly making fun of Rivera’s rendition of “Unfaithful.” The netizen tweeted, “Asia’s Quail char.”

Velasquez, who is dubbed as “Asia’s Songbird,” replied to the netizen’s tweet and beseeched him and others to stop bashing her.

Velasquez added that Rivera isn’t really a singer, but an actress—and a commendable one at that.

“Besides hindi naman talaga singer ang lola niyo,” she said. “She’s an actress and very good one so please stop na.”

The netizen heeded Velasquez’s request, saying they weren’t bashing Rivera and that they actually admired her as an actress.

“Queen natuwa lang po kami sa ‘Unfaithful’ version ni Miss Marian,” the netizen wrote back. “Not really bashing her though, I admire her as an actress. Peace po, Miss Reg.”

Velasquez agreed, but told the netizen that they never really knew what Rivera could be feeling and that she might have been hurt by the jokes.

“Ok but please no more na kasi hindi natin alam baka naman na hurt na rin sya diba please napag katuwaan na naman ok na yun.”

The netizen, on his end, told Velasquez it won’t happen again.
