Amber Heard: Mera no damsel in distress
Amber Heard, who plays Atlantean heroine Mera in DC’s superhero films, is elated that her character doesn’t require saving by men. According to the actress, the water-manipulating Mera would be prominently featured in the upcoming “Aquaman” film, which was slated for a December release.
“What I really love is that [‘Aquaman’] does not rely on this whole ‘damsel in distress’ formulaic thing… [that] we’ve seen a million times,” Heard recently told entertainment site Collider. “He doesn’t rescue the girl and then save the world—in fact, I save him… they go on this adventure as equal partners and they end it that way.”
Heard was married to actor Johnny Depp, but their union ended two years ago, after she alleged that he was abusive. After they settled the divorce and her domestic abuse case, the “Justice League” actress donated the entire $7-million settlement to two organizations.
Recently, she was in Washington to support sexual assault survivors during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation battle. Heard, in one of the photos, held an American flag.
She wrote, “Thank you to those brave enough to want the best for our country… [Survivors], against all odds… come forward anyway. And thank you to the senators [who are] brave and compassionate enough to also do what’s hardest. We survivors know how that feels.” —OLIVER PULUMBARIT
