Steve Dailisan pursues love of flying, now a pilot

Former GMA-7 news anchor and news producer Steve Dailisan left his job last year to pursue his love of flying. One year later, he succeeded in becoming a pilot.
Dailisan shared the good news on his Facebook page last Monday, Oct. 8. Apparently, being a pilot was not his childhood dream, but he recognized it eventually as his destiny.
“It has never been my childhood dream. How can you dream of something that is way beyond your reach? I’m just being realistic,” he stated.

“Alam ko kasi na sintayog ng lipad ng eroplano ang presyo (I know for a fact that the price in becoming a pilot is as high as an airplane’s flight),” he explained. “The training cost in aviation remains astronomical in value. My family already struggled sending me to college how much more in a flight school?”
He recalled that back when he was in university, he had to work double time to maintain a grade that would exempt him from paying his tuition fee in Polytechnic University of the Philippines. To pursue his passion for flying this time, he had to work doubly hard than how he did when he was in college, to be able to pay his tuition fees as well as to support himself.
“Going back to flying, sabi nila ‘pang mayaman lang’ at ‘para lang sa may buo ang loob,’ he said. “Buo ang loob, alam kong mayroon ako niyan. Pero ibang usapan kapag pera na ang labanan.”
(Going back to flying, people say it’s only for the rich and for the brave. I know that I am brave. But things are different when money is involved.)
He asked himself if pursuing aviation is worth leaving his broadcast journalism career, for which he invested 12 years. He also wondered where he will get the money to pay for his tuition fee.
“But I just closed my eyes and took the biggest leap of faith,” he stated. “I left everything behind and used my savings for this crazy love of flying.”
“Mahirap man siyang pangarapin noon, hindi naman nangangahulugang hindi mo na siya puwedeng pagsikapang maabot ngayon,” Dailisan said.
(It may be hard to dream about it back then, [but] it doesn’t mean you can’t work hard to achieve it today.) JB
