The quirky team Avatar from the Nickelodeon animated show “Avatar: The Last Airbender” will be making a comeback through a live-action adaptation by Netflix.
Word of the new show went out through Netflix’s Twitter account on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The tweet included a concept art by John Staub, which showed Appa and a small figure with a staff amid a white landscape. Fans of the animated show may immediately assume the figure as Aang since the airbender is essentially inseparable from his sky bison animal guide.

Another tweet from NX (@NXOnNetflix) added details such as “Avatar” original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko being on board with the project. This bit of information alone should calm nervous fans who still recall the 2010 film adaptation by M. Night Shyamalan.

Furthermore, Konietzko and DiMartino said the new adaptation would be culturally appropriate and would include a non-whitewashed cast, according to a report by Variety.
“We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast,” said the creators. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action and world-building.”
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” debuted on Nickelodeon in February 2005 and ended its run in July 2008 after three seasons. Despite being a children’s show, its themes, comedy and characters also attract a loyal fanbase from an older audience. Nickelodeon would later air a sequel to “The Last Airbender” with “The Legend of Korra,” which would run from 2012 to 2014 across four seasons. “Korra” continued the “Avatar” story after a longtime skip. It focused on the descendants of the original team Avatar and a new cast, particularly the water tribe girl Korra, who is the reincarnation of Aang and the next Avatar. /ra
