Keith on Demi’s alcohol and drug abuse woes

While Keith Urban doesn’t personally know Demi Lovato, the country star has offered advice to the pop singer, who was recently hospitalized due to an apparent drug overdose.

“She [needs to have] good people around her and a willingness to want to live a different way, if that’s what she wants to do. It’s all up to her,” he told Today Extra.

Like Demi, Keith has had to wrestle with alcohol and drug abuse in the past.

“It had nothing to do with whether life was good or bad,” the singer-songwriter said of his addiction in “Interview Australia.”

“I was an equal-opportunity addict. I would get high when it was sunny, high when it was raining—it didn’t matter,” Keith added.

Keith confessed that he “wasn’t in a healthy place” when he first met his now wife, movie star Nicole Kidman, who stepped in and urged him to go into rehab a few months after their wedding in 2006.

“My wife put an intervention together,” said the singer-songwriter, who has been clean for 12 years now. “It’s true. It was love in action, and the timing was absolutely divine.”—ALLAN POLICARPIO
