Queen of All Media Kris Aquino took to her Instagram page last July 24 to share to her fans the latest development about her involvement in the Hollywood film “Crazy Rich Asians”, slated to be released in August.
Aquino shared an invite she received from her United States-based agent Chris Lee for the film’s premiere on Aug. 7. The premiere will be held at the TCL Chinese Theatre on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at Hollywood Boulevard in California.
Aquino spoke of the time she auditioned for the film last March 2017, saying that she was “back to zero” during those days.
“I hope this post will inspire you,” Aquino began her recollection. “I was at practically back to zero when I auditioned for this film March 25, 2017. Sumugal na dahil ang pakiramdam po walang mawawala… Na shock dahil June 14, 2017 nag start mag shooting na… (I gambled because I felt there was nothing to lose. I was shocked because by June 14, 2017, filming already began.)”
Aquino still isn’t allowed to reveal her role in the film at this point, and said that she’s just waiting for the go signal of Warner Bros. Pictures so she can show images of her in costume. She hinted, however, that Dubai-based Filipino fashion designer Michael Cinco was the one behind her ensemble.
“Waiting for the go signal of @wbpictures when we can release some pictures of me in costume kasi pag nakita na yung gawa ni @michael5inco medyo giveaway na po) pero para po sa karangalan nating mga Pinoy- napakalaking ‘boost’ ito!” (… Once you see the costume created by Michael Cinco, it’s already a giveaway, but for the pride of us Filipinos, this is a huge boost.)
“Crazy Rich Asians” is based on its eponymous novel by Kevin Kwan, published in 2013. The novel fast became an international bestseller and took only a matter of time before being adapted into a major film.
Aquino has defended her cameo appearance in the film, which was mocked by critics. Although she would be appearing for only “5 minutes,” she is still proud of her involvement in a “Warner Brothers history making movie.” But it seems some bashers are really persistent, as one tried to rain on Aquino’s parade when it commented on her recent post.
“Sus 5 second exposure!” wrote the netizen (@anuponpranong). “Dadaan lang camera sa kanya. Extra! Extra!”
Aquino, however, kept her composure in replying: “Ito lang po ang pwede kong sabihin — IKINATABA ng puso ko na sobrang nagmamahal sa lahat ng Pilipino na nakikipagsapalaran sa lahat ng sulok ng mundo sa maliit o malaki mang posisyon, na ako yung napili for this role.”
(This is all I can say: my heart is filled up, as it loves Filipinos, and as it took a chance in competing against everyone who came from all corners of the world [and from whatever social standing], because I was the one chosen for this role.)
“Kasi nga binitbit ko yung ‘identity’ natin (It’s because I carried our identity),” Aquino said as she extended her gratitude to the novel’s writer, Kwan. “And we owe @kevinkwanbooks a big THANK YOU. He fought for us.”
She added that she never claimed she would have a long exposure in her role, but finds it meaningful nonetheless: “And we can be proud! For all those times we felt judged or looked down upon — this time in Crazy Rich Asians — tayo ang tiningala (we were the ones looked up to).” JB
