The much-awaited Atom Araullo starrer film “Citizen Jake” is set to hit the cinemas nationwide starting May 23.
The movie was previously screened last March at the UP Cine Adarna, University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. Now, the film is taking its story to a bigger audience.
The movie is filmmaker Mike De Leon’s return to cinema after an 18-year hiatus. It is about the life of a journalist named Jake Herrera (played by Araullo) and his personal contradictions as both a member of a political family and a journalist who vowed to expose the truth.
He then discovers the gravity of corruption in the society as a whole as he digs down into a gruesome crime that that leads him into such profound realization.
“Ostensibly, it is dramatic fiction told in film, a strong drama of a dysfunctional family, made so by animosities mixed with political corruption, continuing feudalism and paternalism. But there are many elements of documentary truth and metacinema in it and sometimes the lines are blurred,” De Leon told the Inquirer in past interviews.
The movie is Araullo’s acting debut and he has received praises what most people say is a job well done.
Araullo has recently moved to GMA network from ABS-CBN. He is currently doing documentaries. He also hosted the crowd-sourced travel show “Adventure Your Way” on AXN. /muf
