The Nee Brothers are taking the director’s chair, previously linked with David S. Goyer, on a new adaptation of a cult 1980s cartoon, “Masters of the Universe”.
David S. Goyer of “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Batman v Superman” had written the new He-Man movie and stays on as an executive producer, but it’s Adam and Aaron Nee who will be directing, according to Variety.
Mattel’s original toy line was launched in 1981, with a collection of muscle-bound fantasy heroes and villains, fighting over the future of an earth-like planet called Eternia.
Among other things, Mattel’s merchandising efforts produced two comic book sequences, with DC Comics overseeing the second run, animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” and spin-off “She-Ra: Princess of Power”, and a 1987 live action film starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella.
The Nee Brothers wrote and directed 2015 crime comedy “Band of Robbers”, a reimagining of Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn partnership; their previous co-directed feature was nearly ten years earlier in another comedy “The Last Romantic”.
The film is still set for a December 2019 debut in United States theaters. JB
