If the Continental Hotel is where criminals are granted temporary solace, Hotel Artemis must be where they get patched up.
Hot on the heels of the 2014 action movie “John Wick” and its 2017 sequel, in which highly trained assassins seek solace in a Continental Hotel where they are forbidden from engaging in deadly business, comes June 2018’s officially unrelated but thematically overlapping “Hotel Artemis”, which got its official trailer Monday.
Jodie Foster stars as The Nurse, who has been keeping criminals alive for over two decades at the members-only Artemis, a medical fortress that survives on trust and rules, she says, and where patients are forbidden from engaging in deadly business.
But the hospital’s code is about to be put to the test when brothers Honolulu and Waikiki (Brian Tyree Henry and Sterling K. Brown) show up after a heist gone wrong.
Entirely by mistake, they come away from the botched robbery in possession of an immensely valuable item, and now The Wolf King (Jeff Goldblum) is knocking at the door.
Sofia Boutella, Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Day and Dave Bautista co-star, while Drew Pearce, screenplay writer on “Iron Man 3” and the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes 3”, makes his feature-length debut.
Yet despite similarities to the “John Wick” formula, “Hotel Artemis” appears to have its own action cinema aces up its sleeve.
Working with Pearce is Park Chan-wook cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon (“Old Boy”, “Mademoiselle”, “Stoker”, “Lady Vengeance”), who more recently lensed 2017 horror “It”; composer Cliff Martinez has a similar history with Nicolas Winding Refn, accumulating credits on “The Neon Demon”, “Drive” and “Only God Forgives” after providing the score for Oscar favorite “Traffic”.
The film is set for wide release from June 8. JB
