Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro has launched a scholarship aimed at helping aspiring filmmakers in Mexico realize their dreams.

Del Toro recently went back to his hometown to attend the Guadalajara International Film Festival, held between Mar. 9 to 16, where he offered a series of free master classes for fans.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he and organizers announced the Jenkins-Del Toro International Film Scholarship during the event. The program would annually award $60,000 to a Mexican filmmaker who will be sent to study at a prestigious film institute overseas.

“If we change a life, if we change a history, we change a generation,” said del Toro in the report.

A new state-of-the art cinema named after del Toro was also inaugurated at the festival. Alfred Bayle/JB
