Aljur Abrenica recounts breaking the ice with Robin Padilla

Aljur Abrenica was not on speaking terms with his fiancee Kylie Padilla’s father, Robin until a recent meeting in February.

A point of contention has been that Robin, 48, wanted the couple to get married after they had son Alas Joaquin. Kylie has maintained that the two aren’t ready to take that step and don’t want to rush into it for others’ approval.

Robin had initially stayed away from his own grandson but finally met him last November when he was about three months old. Still, Aljur wasn’t part of that milestone.

But finally this year, Aljur was welcomed into the Padilla clan and even met Robin’s mother, Eva Cariño.

The “Asintado” actor recalled on the talk show “Tonight with Boy Abunda” that he was a bundle of nerves before meeting Kylie’s father.

Napansin ko sa sarili ko, ang tagal kong magbihis. Nakapitong beses yata akong nagpalit ng pantalon,” he shared. (I noticed that I took so long to get ready. I changed my pants about seven times.)

While changing his pants, he would rehearse the lines he wanted to say to Robin, which was mainly about formally asking Kylie’s hand in marriage.

His nervousness was to the point that even before leaving with his family, he asked their opinion on his choice of pants.

When they arrived at Robin and Mariel Rodriguez’ home, Robin was the one who greeted them and invited the family in.

He recited his lines: “Tito Robin, magandang gabi po sa inyo. Kaya po nandito ako ngayon ay pormal ko pong hihingin ang kamay ng anak ninyo. Kasama ko po ang pamilya ko.” (Tito Robin, good evening. I’m here to ask the hand of your daughter. I’m accompanied by my family.)

After introductions between the two families, Robin took Aljur aside for a one-on-one.

Both apologized to one another, with Robin explaining why he initially did not support them.

As for Aljur, “Sabi ko, ‘pasensya na Tito Robin na ngayon lang nangyari ito.’” (I said, “Sorry Tito Robin that this only happened now.)

He explained to Boy Abunda that he feared being rejected. But in the end, the effort was worth it.

Para naging magkaibigan eh, nagkwentuhan eh,” he said. “Pati siya may payo bilang isang ama, kung sino si Kylie sa kanya.” (It’s like we became friends, we shared stories. He even had advice on being a father and what Kylie meant to him.)

He also said his fiancee was a vision of happiness. “Si Kylie, nakita ko yung ngiti, sobrang saya. Hanggang sa pag-uwi namin, hanggang sa paggising namin, masayang-masaya yung bahay namin.” (I saw happiness in Kylie’s smile. Even when we went home until we woke up, there was so much happiness in our home.) Niña V. Guno/JB
