In my iPad I have John Truby’s screenwriting book “The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller.”
I like it because it’s no-nonsense and straightforward and offers lessons on what works onscreen.
A script doctor in Hollywood, Truby follows a nonacademic approach. He believes in the three-act structure, but is modern and analytical at the same time. He emphasizes the creation of characters that the audience can relate with.
My favorite quote of his is: “When the audience no longer has to figure out the story, it ceases being an audience, and the story stops.” Bayani San Diego Jr.
