WATCH: Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Unsane’ shot entirely on iPhone
Claire Foy stars in “Unsane”, a twisting thriller laced with themes of mental health, involuntary confinement, and predatory behavior.
Filmed in a single week and shot entirely on iPhone, “Unsane” is tracking for release in the United States on March 23.
It’s the latest from Steven Soderbergh, best known as the director of “Traffic”, “Erin Brockovich” and “Solaris”, and with murder mystery series “Mosaic” having just debuted on HBO after 2017’s crime comedy “Logan Lucky” offered a new outlet for James Bond actor Daniel Craig.
The trailer invites viewers to question the lead character’s sanity, just as she does herself, as well as the motives of those around her.
Claire Foy steps into the lead role following regal turns in “Wolf Hall” and then “The Crown”, while her apparent stalker is played by Joshua Leonard of another disruptive horror, 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project”, as well as the more recent “Bates Motel”.
Amy Irving is known for her pivotal role as Sue Snell in 1976 Stephen King adaptation “Carrie” and reunites with Soderbergh after previously appearing in “Traffic”; Erin Wilhelmi and Gibson Frazier were in Soderbergh’s TV series “The Knick”.
“Unsane” represents a bit of a genre switch for its writers, James Greer and Jonathan Bernstein, who collaborated on comedies “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector”, the Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine romcom “Just My Luck” and the Jackie Chan film “The Spy Next Door”. JB
