Ryza Cenon has been part of numerous television shows since entering the biz in 2004, but it wasn’t until last year that she finally top-billed a movie.
But better late than never.
After doing the indie romance-horror flick “Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B” last year, Ryza is now poised to open 2018 with her first mainstream starrer, the romantic drama “Mr. and Mrs. Cruz,” which opens on Jan. 24.
“This is my first mainstream film, which means that more people will be able to watch. That’s why I’m nervous, I feel the pressure because this is all very new to me. I don’t know the process or what it’s like,” she told reporters at a recent press conference.
“This is how a singer releasing his or her debut album must feel like!” quipped Ryza, who also headlines the popular, campy GMA 7 afternoon drama, “Ika-6 na Utos.”
Her inspiration, she related, is Jodi Sta. Maria, who likewise hit her stride later in her career. “I just turned 30, so it’s already a bit late. But when I look at Jodi’s career, I see that there’s still a chance to get good offers. She made me feel like there’s still hope,” Ryza said. “She’s my peg.”
In 2015, Ryza fell into depression, partly because of her lack of projects and her career’s dimming prospects.
“I waited long, worked hard, and now I’m reaping the fruits. I feel stronger now,” said Ryza, who’s now being managed by Viva Entertainment.
And if there was one thing she has learned about her past career struggles, it’s that life simply has its ups and downs. “When you’re down, it doesn’t mean that you will be there forever. Perhaps you were put in such situation to prepare you for the challenges ahead,” she said. “Don’t quit… The right role—into which you can pour your talent and help get you noticed—will come.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Cruz,” which was filmed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo in picturesque El Nido, Palawan, tells of Gela (Ryza) and Raffy (JC Santos), who go to the islands for their respective solo trips. They bump into each other, enjoy each other’s company, and eventually, find themselves in a complicated relationship.
“It’s not just about love, but finding closure, finding one’s self,” Ryza said.
