Michelle Williams reveals being suicidal during peak of Destiny’s Child
Singer Michelle Williams, a former member of Destiny’s Child, recently revealed that she had been battling depression since she was 13, and that she was suicidal despite being part of the wildly popular girl group.
“I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time, suffering from depression,” Michelle, who used to perform with Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, revealed during a hosting stint in “The Talk.”
“When I disclosed it to our manager [Mathew Knowles, Beyocé’s father] at the time—bless his heart—he was like, ‘You all just signed a multimillion dollar deal. You’re about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?’” she recalled.
Michelle said her depression worsened to the point of being “suicidal.” But it wasn’t until she was in her 30s that that she finally understood what she was dealing with. “Sometimes, you feel like, ‘I’m the provider, I take care of people. I’m not supposed to be feeling this way. What do I do?’ And I wanted out,” related Michelle, who hopes to erase the stigma related to depression.
