Singer-comedian and original Pedro Penduko actor Janno Gibbs has handed the torch of the iconic character to Kapamilya heartthrob James Reid.
In an announcement by Viva Artists Agency, Reid and Gibbs were seen together in a photo with the caption, “Si Penduko noon at Ang Penduko ngayon!” (Penduko before and the new Penduko)
The first Filipino actors to play Pedro Penduko on the big screen were Efren Reyes Sr. in 1954 and Ramon Zamora in 1973. But the most famous version of Pedro Penduko was given life by Gibbs.
He first did “Ang Pagbabalik ni Pedro Penduko” in 1994 which he starred in with fellow comedians Leo Martinez, Chiquito and Arnel Ignacio, among others. His leading ladies were Donita Rose and Vina Morales.
It was only years after in 2000 that he did a remake of the movie through the hit “Pedro Penduko, Episode II: The Return of the Comeback”. This time, his daughter Alyssa Gibbs was already part of the cast. His leading lady was LJ Moreno.
Reid, meanwhile, now starts his training for the movie. Just as in the past movies, Viva Films will be producing the next Pedro Penduko film. JB
