Comedian Empoy Marquez is without a doubt one of today’s hottest leading men. But unlike those who bank on their good looks to achieve such status, Empoy takes on his hilarious antics to prove that indeed, “funny is the new pogi.”
He may have been in the industry for quite a while, but it was only until his blockbuster sleeper hit, “Kita Kita,” that he was instantly launched to superstardom.
So for him, what does it really mean when they say “funny is the new pogi”?
“Funny is the new pogi kasi kailangan po natin ‘yan lalo sa nangyayare sa buong Pilipinas kailangan natin maging masaya, always smile and that’s best thing you could give,” he said on Friday at the grand media launch of his newest movie “The Barker (Don’t Know What to DO)”.
(Funny is the new handsome because with all that’s happening in the Philippines right now, we need to be happy, always smile because that’s the best thing you could give.)
He, however, gave his two cents on why funny guys are better than the handsome ones.
“Kasi ‘yung funny kasi pwedeng maging cure kung ano man ‘yung sakit mo, ‘yung pogi cure lang siya sa mata, pero ako kasi ferfect ako eh, funny na fogi pa, with F.”
(Because funny could be a cure to whatever sickness you have whereas with the handsome, it’s only cure for the eye. But me, I’m ferfect, funny and at the same time handsome.)
Now more than ever, doors have now opened up for him. After “Kita Kita,” he now has more films lined up such as his second starring movie, “The Barker (Don’t Know What to Do)” together with Viva Artists Agency talent Shy Carlos. And then, he is set to do another film this time with sexy actress Ellen Adarna under Star Cinema.
The success of “Kita Kita” also warranted him and his leading lady Alessandra de Rossi a reunion project now on television via a teleserye set to air on the Kapamilya network.
Apart from the said projects, he is also set to do several others, which are still in the works.
“May mga nakalatag po na projects ngayon, ‘yung iba po mini-meeting pa po kung ano po ‘yung about po sa story. Fina-finalize pa po nila ‘yung script. Pagtutulung-tulungan po namin na i-renovate kung ano man po ‘yung nai-submit ‘nung mga scriptwriters,” he said.
(There are projects that are lined up now; however, others are still being worked out as to their storylines. The scripts are still being finalized. We are all collaborating to renovate whatever were submitted to us by the scriptwriters.)
Directed by Dennis Padilla and produced by Blank Pages Productions and Viva Films, “The Barker (Don’t Know What to Do)” will hit cinemas nationwide on Oct. 25. /ra
