Another prequel to the upcoming “Blade Runner 2049” has gone online, and this time, the story was told through an anime short.

“Blade Runner: Black Out 2022” sets the timeline to three years after the original “Blade Runner” movie. A widespread blackout has gripped a city on the West Coast of the United States, and replicants are being blamed for it.

The brainchild of anime producer, filmmaker and screenwriter Shinichiro Watanabe, the short video does its best to stay true to the world of “Blade Runner”. According to Shinichiro, he drew great inspiration from the original movie and tried to apply it in the anime that he created. He is well-known for directing the popular anime series “Cowboy Bebop” and “Samurai Champloo”.

Apart from a preview of “Black Out 2022”, this video also features a behind-the-scenes look in the creation of the anime.

Shinichiro said, “I was careful about two things when creating this anime piece. The first was to pay the greatest respect to the original ‘Blade Runner’.”

He continued, “The second was to make this anime true to the world but not an imitation.”

Anime streaming site Crunchyroll currently offers “Blade Runner: Black Out 2022” exclusively. Two other prequels, “2036: Nexus Dawn” and “2048: Nowhere to Run”, are available on the Warner Bros. Pictures YouTube channel. JB
