WATCH: Short film adds backstory to upcoming ’Blade Runner 2049’

It appears that a lot of things happened after the conclusion of the first “Blade Runner” movie, so “Blade Runner 2049” director and four-time recipient of the Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction, Denis Villeneuve, prepared three short films to fill in the gaps, with help from some of his respected artists.

The first of these shorts was uploaded on the Warner Bros. Pictures YouTube channel. Titled “2036: Nexus Dawn” and directed by Luke Scott (The Martian), it focuses on a meeting of leaders in the year 2036, before the events of 2049.

Jared Leto’s character Niander Wallace attends the meeting in a bid to allow the production of a new type of replicant, a type of robot that almost perfectly copies humans except for emotions.

He argues that his replicants will not rebel and are completely subservient. As an example, a somewhat vague order was given to the replicant beside him which lead to the robot’s “death.”

One of the trailers for “2049” hinted at an underlying plot being orchestrated by Niander Wallace. This short film shows more of how calculating and ruthless the character is. This almost surely paints him as the main antagonist.

Watch out for the two remaining short films as “Blade Runner 2049” nears its premiere of October 9. JB
