With no less than 1979 Miss International Melanie Marquez as her aunt, actress Teresita “Winwyn” Marquez hopes to win, at least for now, the local crown for Miss World Philippines 2017.

Her failed attempt at the 2015 Binibining Pilipinas has not downed her resolve to win a crown and eventually become a “beauty with a purpose.” Winwyn’s take on another pageant is simply a picture of perseverance and determination to push a dream and make it a reality.

One of the most popular candidates in the Miss World Philippines 2017, this daughter of actor-politician Joey Marquez and actress-politician Alma Moreno constantly seeks advice from her family and friends, and who should be able to best give her pointers for the pageant but her beauty queen aunt.

“Unfortunately wala yung tita ko dito, nasa abroad siya ngayon but she texted me to just have fun, enjoy mo yung moment, ‘wag ka ma-pressure, ‘wag kang matakot, magsalita ka kung ano yung nasa isip mo. Just do your best and lalabas naman yun eh kung ano yung shine na nasa loob mo,” she said in an interview with reporters at the official launch of Miss World Philippines 2017 candidates at the New World Makati Hotel on Monday.

Winwyn says that she has been training since 2015 for this pageant. “I’ve given more time for this, I’m prepared for this more,” she said.

“I want to be positive as much as I can throughout the journey of winning the crown. Nandito ako (I’m here) to try it again,” she added.

Experience being the best teacher, she’s definitely learned a lot in her past stints for a title. There are other pageants she can get herself into, but it is Miss World that she chose.

“I researched about it, and mas lumapit ‘ung heart ko sa Miss World [Ph] because of their purpose. Mapapakita ko yung gusto kong rumampa, gusto ko mag perform, at the same time, I can speak out what I want.”

Advocacy

As a pageant tradition, she has one advocacy she wants to work on–her alma mater Southville International School and Colleges’ “Save a PoUCh” (Save a Poor Urban Child).

“They adopt different schools and they get a poor urban child na hindi talaga kaya mag-aral (who can’t afford to go to school). So we support them, minsan (sometimes) nag-vo-volunteer ako to teach and basically it’s about having a good education and chance to have a right to education,” she said.  /ra
