Before “Annabelle” etched her way to the subconscious of moviegoers through “The Conjuring” franchise, the red-haired doll Chucky held the title as the most popular malevolent toy in the big screen.

A more cunning and ruthless version of the demented serial killer is back for the seventh installment of the “Child’s Play” franchise, called “Cult of Chucky”.

As seen in a trailer released over the weekend, the film delves into the present lives of the Chucky victims from earlier films.

In the center of it all is Nica Pierce (played by Fiona Dourif) who was sent to a mental institution due to the events of the previous film.

The sinister doll is reintroduced by Pierce’s psychiatrist, who believed that her trauma could be resolved by bringing “Chucky” back into her life.

Chaos ensued soon after, as people started dying in mysterious manners after the doll’s re-emergence.

Meanwhile, “Cult of Chucky” is directed by Don Mancini, who returns to the fray after the initial “Child’s Play” movie in 1988.

The popular supernatural-slasher film was rebooted with the “Curse of Chucky” in 2013, with filmmakers distancing itself from its comedy-horror take.

The film, which also stars Alex Vincent, Summer H. Howell, Jennifer Tilly, Grace Lynn Kung and Brad Dourif (voicing Chucky, who also happens to be Fiona’s father in real life), makes its way to DVD, Blu-ray and digital platforms on October 3. JB
