Michelle Rodriguez threatens to leave the “Fast and Furious” franchise for its dearth of “girl power.”
The 38-year actress, who has starred in the drag-racing franchise since 2001, took a swipe against the cast and producers of the franchise’s eighth installment, “The Fate of the Furious,” for lack of female representation in the film.
“F8 is out digitally today,” Rodriguez wrote via Instagram on Tuesday. “I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise. It’s been a good ride and I’m grateful for the opportunity the fans & studio have provided over the years.”
Rodriguez portrayed the role of Letty Ortiz, Dominic Toretto’s (played by Vin Diesel) sultry and street-smart girlfriend-turned-wife. After Paul Walker’s death in 2013, both Diesel and Rodriquez prevailed as the original cast members left in “The Fate of the Furious.”
Although female actresses such as Jordana Brewster, Charlize Theron and Gal Gadot appeared in the previous “Fast and Furious” movies, Rodriguez still yearns for better female representation in “Fast and Furious.”
“Theron is, I think, the most powerful villain this franchise has ever seen,” she told Entertainment Tonight last year. “In order for me to be a part of the franchise in the future, they need to up the ante on the females. I mean, it’s like a sausage factory in this thing.”
“The Fate of the Furious,” which was screened last April, grossed P110 million in its first two screening days in the Philippines. The franchise’s ninth and tenth installments are slated for release in 2019 and 2021, respectively. Gianna Francesca Catolico /ra
