Woofs and warps in show biz

Sandara Park

Potential winners in show biz this season are paced by Sandara Park, whose performing career in Korea has branched out to include film acting, as well. Her popular singing group 2NE1 may have folded up, but she’s clearly still a stellar comer.

When she began her performing career in the Philippines a decade ago, Sandara was dissed by some locals, who sniffed that she didn’t have what it took to become a star.

Well, she’s proven them wrong regionally, so the egg is now on their faces. Sandara’s new film, “One Step,” costars her with Han Jae-suk. She’s also in “Cheese in the Trap” and cohosts OnStyle’s “Get It Beauty” show.

For his part, Daniel Padila disappointed some music buffs with his lackluster and occasionally “flat” musical guest performance in the Binibining Pilipinas grand coronation night show.

Daniel Padilla

He was tapped to “serenade” the contestants and thus enhance their beautiful aura, but his singing was so off-the-cuff and unenthusiastic that it had more of a downbeat and dulling effect.

Yes, Daniel’s presence added to the special’s star value, but it was ultimately underwhelming, so the show’s producers should be urged to tap stars who can really sing for next year’s pageant finals.

As for Daniel, we like his recent moves to “adult-up” and diversify his performing involvements, but he should work harder and more enthusiastically at them.

As for singing, he can carry a tune, but a guest stint on “Binibini” requires much more than that!

Back to the upbeat beat! We caught Boy Abunda on “Magandang Buhay” more than once last month, and he did so well that we’re keeping our fingers crossed that he will be tapped to cohost the midmorning program on a more regular basis.

It would go a long way in solving one of the show’s basic problems, which is the general sameness of its all-woman hosting component.

With Boy added to the mix, the points of view expressed on the show will be more diverse—and its cohosts will have to be on their toes to keep up with the always eventful Abundant One.

On global TV, the biggest personal waves are being made by comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, whose family’s medical crisis recently brought out the best in him.

Kimmel shared that, just last month, his wife gave birth to a baby boy, Billy, who was the light of their lives for only a few days, because it turned out that he had a hole in his heart!

It’s a good thing that a nurse noticed that the newborn babe was having difficulty breathing, so he was immediately operated on to save his life.

Happily, the operation was a success, and Kimmel emotionally shared with his show’s many viewers that the near-fatal experience had made him an advocate of medical care for all Americans.

This is a politically controversial position to take in the Age of Trump, but Kimmel is sticking to his guns, and his followers are loving him all the more for it!

That’s what happens when a comedian reveals his softer, deeper and more human side to viewers—a lesson hopefully learned by other TV “clowns” who want to affect and influence people—for keeps!
