After almost eight years of uncovering the most mysterious monstrosities lurking in bodies of water, Animal Planet’s hit show “River Monsters” aired its final season last month.
Hosted by biologist and angling savant Jeremy Wade, the series, which debuted in 2009, produced nine action-packed seasons that involved traveling around the world in search of the most fearsome freshwater killers.
But much to everyone’s surprise, the network has decided to pull the plug, after admitting they were running out of “monsters” to feature.
“Some shows can run forever, but our subject matter is finite,” Wade said in a press release, according to Mic.
“Ten years ago, I had a list in my head, which seemed impossibly ambitious at the time, but everything has now been ticked off—and then some. I have seen things beyond my wildest dreams, and sharing those moments with our loyal Animal Planet audiences has made them doubly special,” he said.
Meanwhile, Patrice Andrews, Animal Planet’s general manager, lauded Wade’s efforts and commitment to his audience.
“Jeremy has taken the Animal Planet audiences on the most incredible journeys over the past eight seasons and we know our viewers will miss those adventures,” she said.
Network executives also revealed that Wade saved his best for last this season, as he will go for the most sought-after creatures for his swan song—including an unknown sea monster, allegedly coral reef creatures killing snorkelers in Indonesia and more mysterious beats, among others.
