A popular Filipino pastry is featured in the upcoming Season 4 finale of “Steven Universe,” a hit series airing on Cartoon Network.
In the said episode, Steven Universe (voiced by Zach Callison) asks his best friend Lars Barriga what dish represents his personality. In response, Barriga picks the succulent ube (purple yam) roll and the duo, joined by their friend Sadie Miller (voiced by Kate Micucci), bakes the pastry.
The appearance of the ube roll enchanted Filipino and Fil-Am netizens, who regarded it as a plus for diversity in the cartoon series.

It’s not surprising that a Filipino reference was highlighted in “Steven Universe” as a roster of talented Filipino-Americans are lending their voices to some of the show’s characters, such as Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl), Shelby Rabara (Peridot) and Jennifer Paz (Lapis Lazuli).
“Steven Universe,” which premiered in 2013, revolves around the adventures of Universe and his friends as they assist the Crystal Gems in fighting monsters and other scoundrels.
