Coco Martin is ready to take on another role once portrayed by the late action star Fernando Poe Jr.

ABS-CBN PR executive Eric John Salut reposted a portrait from the actor’s Instagram fan page, which displayed a photo of Martin and comic strip writer turned director Carlo J. Caparas. It is confirmed that Martin will star and direct Caparas’ “Panday,” which is about Flavio, a blacksmith who forges a meteorite into a mythical sword.

According to ABS-CBN, “Panday” is scheduled to be pitched as one of the entries for the upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival.

Back in 2015, Martin, 35, expressed his fervent desire to re-enact the duel scenes of the iconic blacksmith.”Siyempre lahat naman po siguro ng mga artistang lalaki ay gusto nilang i-remake ang Panday (Of course, I’m sure every male artist wants to remake Panday),” he said then.

“Para sa akin, kapag sinabi mong Panday, ‘yun ang tatak ng superhero ng Pilipino. Kung mayroon po silang Superman, tayo po ay may Panday (For me, Panday is the brand of the Filipino superhero. If they [Americans] have Superman, we have Panday),” Martin added.

Moreover, Martin is no stranger when it comes to reviving Poe’s trailblazing roles. He currently stars in the remake of “Ang Probinsyano,” which is based on Poe’s 1997 film of the same title.

If the project pushes through, Martin will carve his name in the star-studded list of actors who played the illustrious role, which includes Richard Gutierrez, Bong Revilla Jr. and Jericho Rosales.  Gianna Francesca Catolico /ra
