When Evgenia Medvedeva was chosen to represent her country in the recently concluded World Team Trophy in Figure Skating held in Tokyo, she used the spotlight to pay homage to a popular Japanese animated series.
For her solo performance, the 17-year-old Russian figure skater swirled on the rink as Usagi Tsukino from “Sailor Moon.” Dressed in the protagonist’s schoolgirl uniform, Medvedeva flawlessly glided as the series’ opening song “Moonlight Densetsu” was played. In the middle of her routine, she re-enacted Tsukino’s bubbly transformation into the titular heroine.
In the end of her performance, Medvedeva recited Tsukino’s popular dialogue, “Tsuki ni kawatte, oshioki yo (In the name of the moon, I’ll punish you)!”
Medvedeva, also a two-time women’s figure skating champion, gushed about skating animated series “Yuri! On Ice,” posing with the lead character’s standee in a tweet that’s grabbing fame on Twitter.
