Styles responded to the Supreme Court's ruling on Friday, June 26, that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States, by tweeting, "Huge day for America. Happy to see the news. All the love." The ruling is a historic culmination of decades of litigation over gay marriage and gay rights generally. Gay and lesbian couples already could marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia. The court's 5-4 ruling means the remaining 14 states, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage.(Photo by Eric Jamison/Invision/AP, File)

Harry Styles has broken his silence on his relationship with ex-girlfriend, pop star Taylor Swift.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 23-year-old former “One Direction” member opened up about his highly gossiped 2012 romance with Swift, who is known for her star-studded “list” of men previously linked to her. In one instance, he recalled the time paparazzi mobbed them while they were strolling in Central Park in New York.

“When I see photos from that day, I think relationships are hard, at any age,” Styles elucidated. “Adding in that you don’t really understand exactly how it works when you’re 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn’t make it easier. I mean, you’re a little bit awkward, to begin with. You’re on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it – I just wanted it to be a normal date.”

Styles was aware that two of Swift’s tracks, “Style” and “Out of the Woods,” might have tackled their short-lived relationship. But when quizzed about his reaction to both hits, Styles replied, “She’s so good, they’re bloody everywhere. She doesn’t need me to tell her they’re great. They’re great songs…It’s the most amazing unspoken dialogue ever.”

“Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong,” he added.

Meanwhile, Styles hinted at having a new “source of inspiration” for his upcoming first album, which contains his glam rock-inspired single “Sign of the Times.” He said, “She’s a huge part of the album. Sometimes you want to tip the hat, and sometimes you just want to give them the whole cap…and hope they know it’s just for them.”  Gianna Francesca Catolico /ra
