Follow-up moves for new reality tilt champ

MayMay Entrata

New PBB grand champ MayMay Entrata antsily wanted to become a star, hence her determined decision to join and win the TV stellar search.

Aside from her innate hilig to perform, she urgently needed to make money for her cash-strapped family—an added motivation to excel, and win!

But, now that the PBB title is hers, MayMay has to fight another battle—this time, for viewers’ acceptance as an actual star. But, as some past winners’ failed stellar gambits have sadly shown, it isn’t a surefire ticket to the top.

Many champions are hardly heard of these days, so MayMay’s win has to be verified by her follow-up gambits on TV.

Those new moves were recently launched by a “Maalaala Mo Kaya” episode based on MayMay’s life, with the PBB champion playing herself.

How did she fare as an actress? First off, she turned out to be naturally funny and self-effacing. She knew she wasn’t a raving beauty, so she focused on her ability to amuse and entertain.

When it came to the TV bio’s many downbeat scenes, the actress had to go beyond her comedic comfort zone, and venture into darker territory.

To her credit, she passed muster in her turgidly emotional scenes, as well, serving notice that she could turn out to be a versatile player who can make viewers laugh and cry.

On the debit side, however, MayMay stumbled in the TV drama’s dramatically challenging final scene, which had her totally breaking down when she learned that her beloved grandfather had passed away.

The scene was mined for all the sobs and tears it promised—but ended up being stretched out too long and lugubriously. As a result, MayMay ended up repeating herself and her hyper-emotional reactions, so the “acting showcase” felt forced and strained.

Clearly, MayMay has to learn the all-important lesson that, in the acting biz, less is more—and too much emotionalizing should never be countenanced, because it shows that the new talent has faulty artistic judgment.

If MayMay has learned this lesson posthaste after her MMK flub, she can do better on her next attempt to prove that she’s got the real goods as an actress.

But, if she has not learned anything, she can be popular this year, but less and less so in performing seasons to come.
