WATCH: Demi Lovato ‘burns’ James Corden in ‘diva riff-off’

/ 11:52 AM April 07, 2017

To debunk James Corden’s argument that divas of yesteryear were evidently “better” than the divas today, Demi Lovato unleashed her powers during a diva riff-off on “The Late Late Show.”

The pop star blew away everyone in a singing showdown aired on Wednesday’s episode of Corden’s night show. Chaos broke out when Corden ruled that the likes of Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston were better than the new generation of pop stars. This fueled Lovato’s anger, prompting her to interrupt Corden and challenged him to a singing duel.

“If you think divas back then were better and I think divas today are better, why don’t we just settle this tonight?” Lovato asked him.

Lovato, 24, started belting out Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” but Corden, 38, countered her might with Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High.” Corden continued with Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” while Lovato, unmoved by Corden’s mediocre singing, sang Katy Perry’s “Roar.” Lovato capped the battle with her own hit “Heart Attack.”

“I’ve got hits from before you were born,” Corden teased her, but Lovato burned him by saying, “And I’ve got hits that are my own!”

After admitting defeat, Corden got kind and comforting words from Lovato. “You’re the best damn diva I’ve ever seen,” she said. “Maybe there’s a world where divas then and divas now are both great?” Then, both united to sing Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”
