Preparing for disaster
With the typhoon season at our doorstep, it pays to be ready for it. Some tips:
Stock up on food and drinking water. When you go to the market or grocery, buy an extra kilo of rice, sweet potatoes, beans and canned goods—and store them in waterproof containers. It’s best to have at least a week’s worth of food supply.
Backup plan
Set up an emergency plan with your family. If disaster strikes while you’re out, agree on a place where you can all meet up—and, be sure to have a backup plan if those emergency measures fall through.
Prepare ready-to-go survival kits for each member of the family. Your “bug-out bags” and backpacks should contain food, clothes, water and water-purifying tablets, a small tent or sleeping bag, a fire-making device or a box of matches kept in a water-tight container, and a first-aid kit. Be resourceful and innovative.
Stock up on medicine.
