For the first time in his novice music career, Shawn Mendes will star in Ivan Reitman’s musical film “Summer of Love.”

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Reitman had recruited the Canadian singer to star in the upcoming musical, which is reportedly about a student group’s “hippie” protest in California during the hype of the Vietnam war opposition in 1967. At the same time, sought-after performers graced the historic Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, and The Grateful Dead.

It will be Mendes’ second time to be featured on the big screen, following his stint in the Argentine animated film “Underdogs” in 2015. In the small screen, he briefly appeared in the TV series “The 100” back in 2014.

Mendes, 18, dropped his sophomore album “Illuminate” last year, which contained the tracks “Treat You Better,” “Lights on” and “No Promises.” He embarked on a record deal after his acoustic covers of popular songs circulated on video-sharing app Vine.

Filipino fans can seize the opportunity to see Mendes perform live on Saturday, March 18, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Gianna Francesca Catolico /ra
